#BlogosphereChat – Money and Knowing your Worth

The #BlogosphereChat returned on Sunday at 8pm with the topic ‘money and knowing your worth’. Here’s a summary of the chat, including some responses from our community.

Q1. Do you earn money from your content? If not, what would be your first step to monetisation?

Many of our contributors explained how they were beginning to work towards earning more money from their work. Some said they have had opportunities to work with gifted products in the past, or have done a one-off sponsorship, but most admitted to wanting to build up a relationship with a brand to create something more long term. The steps that were mentioned to get to this point were: remaining consistent with content, reaching out to brands, and keeping track of different income avenues to be less reliant on branded work.

Q2. Do you find it challenging knowing what to charge a brand? Do you have a flat rate or price accordingly?

It was clear that many find charging a real challenge, due to a lack of transparency from other influencers, and with each brand and campaign being different. Many expressed how they have a flat rate as they don’t want to undersell themselves, but are willing to negotiate, especially if it is with a brand they love.

Q3. Do you think the quality of content should be put before the potential reach and stats?

The majority of the chat agreed that quality of content should always come first, and often this high quality will bring in more traffic as a result. However a few others raised the point that both were important and valuable, especially depending on what the aim of your content is.

Q4. Have you ever had to turn down a campaign because of budget constraints?

Many admitted to turning down brand collaborations, mainly due to them not offering to pay bloggers, or because the campaign did not align with their content. There was a lot of discussion surrounding feeling bad about turning down these opportunities, but an overall agreement that knowing your worth was more important.

Q5. Do you think having multiple revenue streams is important as a creator?

There was a pretty unanimous ‘yes’ in response to this question, with bloggers understanding that the industry can be quite unstable, and so multiple revenue streams allows there to be something to fall back on if other streams slow down.

Q6. What do you do if a payment is late? Do you have a late payment policy?

Many bloggers emphasised that a late payment policy was a necessity, and should be laid out to brands before taking on the work in order to protect yourself. Others noted that if they got into this situation then sending follow-up emails would be a good first step.
